Why Heel Pain Often Hurts First Thing in the Morning

Morning heel pain is one of the most common patterns people describe with plantar fasciitis and other forms of mechanical heel pain.

A typical story sounds like this: the first few steps out of bed are sharp and uncomfortable, then the pain gradually improves as the foot warms up. The same thing may happen after sitting for a while and then standing again.

One reason this happens is that the plantar fascia, the strong band of tissue that helps support the arch of the foot, can tighten during rest. When you stand up and put weight on the foot, that tissue is suddenly stretched again. If the area is irritated, those first steps can be painful.

Heel pain is not always plantar fasciitis, though. Other problems can cause pain in the heel, including nerve irritation, stress injury, fat pad irritation, tendon problems, and arthritis. Pain that is severe, worsening, associated with swelling, numbness, injury, or difficulty bearing weight should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

For many people with mechanical heel pain, reducing strain on the irritated tissue is often the first goal. This may include better shoe support, avoiding barefoot walking on hard floors, gentle stretching, and using arch support when appropriate.
